GUJRAT MODHERA SUN TEMPLE

Brief History: Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty erected the Modhera Sun Temple between 1026 and 1027 CE, according to the Archeological Survey of India. Upon entering the ancient complex, the first thing you see is the majestic Suryakund, a rectangular-shaped kund with 108 temples dedicated to different gods and demi-gods. Explore the three primary shrines honoring Ganesh and Vishnu situated on the three sides of the kund, as well as a picture of Lord Shiva dancing. Climb the stairs to the “Sabha Mandap,” or assembly and convene, which features twelve carved representations of “Adityas,” another term for the sun god. According to the twelve months, the sun is represented by the twelve carvings on the pillars.
